This is a Student Trainee (Administrative) opportunity under the Internship Program component of the Pathways Programs. Positions will be located in organizations across the Foundation.

Our Student Trainees (Administrative) are clerical positions. They provide support to National Science Foundation scientists and administrators who promote and fund the best possible awards through grants. These positions can be your first step into a fulfilling career at NSF! 

As a Student Trainee (Administrative) you will:

• Students may be hired for Internship positions at any time during the year, & may work full-time or part-time based on office needs.

• Interns may be required to submit updated transcripts and proof of enrollment upon selection.

Qualifications

  • You must be able to type at least 40 words per minute with no more than three errors.
  • To apply for the GS-1 level ($15.00 per hour) job, you must be currently enrolled in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.  No experience or completion of education is required.
  • To apply for the GS-2 level (15.30 per hour) job, you must have 3 months of full-time clerical experience; OR have completed high school or GED diploma: OR possess a combination of high school education and general experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
  • To apply for the GS-3 level ($16.36 per hour) job, you must have at least 6 months of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical or office work; OR you have successfully completed 1 year of education above the high school level; OR you possess a combination of post-high school education and general experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
  • To apply for the GS-4 level ($18.36 per hour) job, you must have at least one year of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical or office work; OR you have successfully completed two years of education above the high school level; OR you possess a combination of post-high school education and general experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
  • To apply for the GS-5 level ($20.54 per hour) job, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include the following: using word processing software to prepare correspondence, reports, and other documents; tracking pending actions to ensure timely completion of work assignments; coordinating and making travel arrangements; responding to routine non-technical inquiries; and coordinating and handling logistical support for meetings; OR you have successfully completed 4 full years of education above the high school level;  OR you possess a combination of post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position is currently excluded from the bargaining unit due to the appointment duration. If extended beyond 89-days, you will be included in the bargaining unit represented by AFGE Local 3403.

Education

Education may be substituted for experience as described in “Qualifications."

All Education must be accredited by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. PLEASE NOTE:  Certificate program is defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institution equal to at least one academic year of full-time study that's part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Relocation expenses will NOT be paid.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicant qualifications will be assessed based on the level of completed education and relevant work experience at the closing date of the announcement. Category rating procedures will be used to rank and select eligibles.  Based on your responses to the occupational questionnaire, you will be assigned a score.  Your score will determine in which of three categories you will be placed:  Excellent, Very Good, or Good.  Under this process, veterans will be assigned to the appropriate category (without additional preference points) and then placed at the top of their category.  

Veterans with service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the highest quality category.
